A delegation from Botswana, made up of representatives from the Office of the President, National Planning Commission and Public Sector Reforms, visited the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) on Thursday, 15 October 2026 to learn about Ghana’s national development planning framework, including its development priorities, planning processes and strategies for promoting balanced and sustainable development.

During a presentation on NDPC’s strategic mandate, Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, highlighted the importance of long-term planning in providing clear direction for Ghana’s development and ensuring continuity across successive administrations. She explained that  development planning should align with existing national policies and the Directive Principles of State Policy under Chapter Six of the 1992 Constitution.

Dr Amoah noted that Ghana’s national development planning system is underpinned by five dimensions namely economic development, social, environmental, infrastructure and spatial development, governance and institutional development and international relations. She also emphasised the importance of discipline, integrity, accountability, respect for the rule of law and responsible leadership in achieving national development objectives.

On road safety and environmental protection, she stressed the need for responsible behaviour, effective enforcement of regulations and public education. She further highlighted the importance of instilling positive values in children through education, noting that collective responsibility and positive behavioural change are essential to building a disciplined and productive society.

The delegation, led by Mr Thabo F. Masalila, expressed appreciation to the Commission for the presentation and the opportunity to learn about Ghana’s national development planning framework.

The visit provided the delegation with insights into Ghana’s planning processes and approaches to coordinating national development priorities.
